As a substitute teacher in the schools of San Francisco and South San Francisco since some time in the last millennium (and in Boston before that), Tom Gallagher sees kids on their worst behavior five days a week – that’s when business is good. Once a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where he was affectionately known as Tommy the Commie and sat on the Joint Committee on Education, Gallagher currently holds the line against academic entropy in everything from pre-Kindergarten through 12th Grade, from Physics to Phys Ed.
The fundamental stance of Sub My Years Underground in America’s Schools is wry – it dares raise questions like why the guy who invented middle schools was never prosecuted for crimes against humanity. At the same time, Gallagher finds much of the current national debate on education misplaced The system works just fine for some, while for others schools are asked to solve problems in children’s lives that are far beyond their scope.

As the parent of a San Francisco public school student, it was with some trepidation that I began to read this no-holds-barred exposé of elementary, middle, and high school classrooms in every corner of the city. I wasn't sure I really wanted to know what goes on after drop-off, especially on those days when the regular teacher is away and, I've long suspected, educating takes a backseat to maintaining a veneer of control, even in the better schools. Well, it's every bit as bad as I suspected. Not for want of effort on the part of Tom Gallagher and subs like him--if indeed any there are like him. But the challenges are often Sisyphean and the behavioral issues seemingly intractable. Nevertheless, the author captures the ineffable weirdness of kids, teachers, administrators, and the system so acutely that I found myself laughing out loud as I made my way through his diary of the tortures and triumphs of substitute teaching. This book should be required reading for anyone involved with public schools as a parent, educator, or public official.Product details

Sub My Years Underground in America Schools edition by Tom Gallagher Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews
Was an enjoyable and fun reading. It was amusing and informative reading. I would highly recommend this book. Tom is an excellent writer.
In-the-trenches account of San Francisco's blackboard jungle -- a good read and cautionary tale.
I don't have kids of my own, but remembering subs of my own educational past, I think Tom Gallagher gets it right. His warm, witty and insightful writing exposes an important topic in American education. Highly recommended.
Substitute teachers, like plumbers and emergency room doctors, don't see systems at their best. Crap and blood everywhere is their normal. Worse, subs are generally not appreciated. People usually thank plumbers and doctors. In the average classroom, when the sub walks in, the devils leap with joy. Tom Gallagher's new book, Sub My Years Underground in America's Schools, is a hilarious and insightful chronicle of one man's odyssey as a substitute teacher in the bowels of public education in, well, not exactly all of America, but San Francisco and environs. I've posted a fuller review on my blog at nicolaus-dot-com. (Damn you for removing my link.)
Mr. Gallagher presents a very accurate portrait of life in today's urban school districts. I know because I work in one. This is the most honest portrayal of what it is like to be in charge of a classroom that I have seen anywhere, but the author manages to maintain his sense of humor throughout(or is it a sense of sarcasm?). Excellent book that should be required reading for all principals and superintendents, not to mention the politicians that ultimately run our school systems. No wonder so many teachers leave the profession after a short time in the classroom it takes a very strong person to deal with what is dished out to them by children.
Well worth your time. Tom Gallagher has spent several decades moving from school to school, Kindergarten through 12th grade as a Substitute Teacher in the San Francisco area - here's the important point - this is a book about the young people he encounters, not himself. Not an exercise in finger pointing at one factor or another as The Reason for poor educational results, but, a disquieting look at an urban school system's students and the contexts that challenge them and their teachers in providing better outcomes for many. Boys and young men struggle the most, it's a national crisis bubbling below the surface but has consequences in our society and economy if some significant changes are not soon implemented to reverse this disturbing trend.
